Just after midnight, a Grand Junction Police officer was walking in the 500 block of Main St. near the breezeway. A man who was standing in the breezeway, later identified as 29-year-old Patricio Preciado of Grand Junction, pointed what appeared to be a black handgun in the officer’s face and said, “Give me your money.” The officer, believing that the man was going to shoot him, drew his handgun. As he did so, Preciado smiled and held up his gun, saying he was just kidding and that it was a toy gun.
The officer then took the fake gun from Preciado and called for additional officers. Preciado told the officer that he did not know he was a cop. The officer was in full uniform at the time and arrested Preciado for attempted robbery and felony menacing.
Based on his training and experience, the officer involved, who is a member of our SWAT team and a defensive tactics instructor, believed based on Preciado’s posture as he held what looked to be a real gun and Preciado’s tone of his voice, that his life was in danger. Whether Preciado was kidding or not, his actions put himself in grave danger. The officer’s alertness, discipline, and continued training allowed him to end this dangerous situation in a manner that stopped the criminal conduct and allowed the officer to take the suspect into custody without further incident.
