GJPD School Resource Officers Arrest 16- year-old For Stealing Rifles From Local Sporting Goods Store #GVCopbeat
Grand Junction Police Department school resource officers arrested a 16-year-old Tuesday night after investigating a theft case involving two rifles that were stolen from Cabela’s yesterday.
We were notified at about 3:30 Tuesday afternoon of at least one suspected juvenile who stole the two rifles by hiding them in his pants and walking out of the store. At this time we believe he may have had an accomplice who distracted employees while the suspect hid the rifles in his pants.
Two school resource officers took the case and began investigating. Using surveillance video from the store and information about a possible vehicle the suspect or suspects were in, the school resource officers were able to identify a house possibly associated with one of the suspects. The officers obtained consent to go inside, and while inside they found the stolen rifles, but no suspects.
Later in the evening they received information that one of the suspects had returned to the house and the SROs again responded there. They attempted to contact the suspect but he took off running. The officers took him into custody after a short foot chase. They also recovered a third stolen gun that had been taken from a pawn shop, inside the home.
The suspect, 16-year-old Florencio Gonzalez of Clifton, was screened into the Division of Youth Corrections on charges of possession of a firearm by a juvenile- repeat offender, obstruction, theft, violation of a restraining order, criminal impersonation, and a warrant for failure to comply. We are still investigating to see if other people were involved in the Cabela’s theft.
