Update on Tuesday, September 9 at 4:30 p.m.
Based on our investigation at this point we are able to release the following additional information:
On Monday, September 8 at approximately 6:00 p.m. a juvenile male was walking in the 2800 block of Mesa Ave. when 15-year-old Dalton Castleberry of Grand Junction began walking toward him from across a field. The victim and Castleberry knew each other. Castleberry raised a semi-automatic handgun in the victim’s direction and fired a single round. The bullet did not hit the victim, but officers found a round from a handgun embedded in a nearby home on Mesa Ave. No one was injured.
Castleberry fled the scene on his bicycle. Grand Junction Police Department officers and Mesa County Sheriff’s Office deputies immediately began searching for Castleberry, and eventually took him into custody at his home in the 600 block of Orchard Run. We have not recovered the gun used in this incident.
Castleberry was screened into the Division of Youth Corrections on charges of attempted first degree murder, juvenile in possession of a handgun, reckless endangerment, and illegal discharge of a firearm.
