Update to This Morning’s Juvenile Auto Theft Suspect Arrest and Officer Injured #GVCopBeat

The officer involved in this morning’s incident, Sgt. Derek Rosales, has been released from the hospital.  He suffered injuries to his left ankle when the juvenile suspect, 13-year-old Cale Schaefer of Grand Junction, reversed the car and struck Sgt. Rosales while he was attempting to get Schaefer out of the car.

Grand Junction Police Chief John Camper said of this incident, “The officers exercised great restraint in dealing with this very dangerous situation, and we are grateful not only that Sgt. Rosales is expected to recover from his injuries but that no one else was hurt.”

The juvenile suspect Schaefer has been screened into the Division of Youth Services.  The most serious charges are:

  • 2nd degree assault on a peace officer
  • 1st degree aggravated motor vehicle theft
  • vehicular eluding
  • vehicular assault

    Please drug test this young man. None of his actions were normal. His actions were still wrong and he needs to be punished; but, his actions sound like meth.
