For Immediate Release
The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has completed its examination regarding the death of Matthew Bandelin, a 38 year-old male resident of Englewood, CO. Mr. Bandelin Was the gentleman that was involved in the incident on Horizon Dr. last night January 23, 2015. The cause of death is multiple injuries and the manner of death is accident.
The law enforcement agency overseeing this investigation is the Grand Junction Police Department. Please contact them for any further details regarding this case.

Update at 12:20 a.m. on January 24

All lanes of Horizon Dr. are now open again.

The northbound lanes of Horizon Dr. are currently closed starting from G Rd. to the Super 8 motel while officers investigate a fatal crash involving a man crossing the street.

At approximately 9:15 p.m., a man crossing eastbound on Horizon Dr. was struck and killed by a driver heading northbound.  An officer quickly responded and performed chest compressions in an effort to save the man, but he was unsuccessful.

The driver agreed to alcohol testing as a standard procedure in fatal crashes, but there is no indication at this point in the investigation that he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

    There has been so many close calls, in this same spot for years. I hope the city will install a bridge system or this unfortunately won’t be the last time. The hoteliers and horizon drive district board of directors need to get out from behind the desk and demand that something is done.
