Grand Junction Police and Grand Junction Fire Departments Investigating Saturday Night’s Fatal Fire #GVCopBeat

At this point in the investigation we do not have any new information to release.  We are continuing to work with the GJFD to determine how the fire started and what the circumstances surrounding the fire were.  The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the two people who were found inside the storage unit, as well as the cause and manner of their deaths, once it has completed its portion of the investigation and notified family members.

Below is the information provided last night by the Grand Junction Fire Department:

The Grand Junction Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 497 28 1/2 Rd. The first unit (Engine 2) was on scene within six (6) minutes of the dispatch time and reported heavy fire and smoke coming from three (3) storage units at the address. Firefighters were able to force entry into the units by cutting the metal doors with their circular saws and extinguish the blaze in all three 3 storage units effectively saving the other connected units from major damage.

The initial dispatch reports indicated the possibility of the storage units being occupied by at least 2 people and sadly this was true. During the fire extinguishment and primary search, firefighters did find two (2) people who were deceased.

The fire is currently under investigation and the Grand Junction Fire Department and the Grand Junction Police Department are working together as a joint investigation team to determine the cause of the blaze.

The GJPD and GJFD will work together to provide information as it becomes available.  Updates will be posted on this site as well as the GJFD’s blog.
