The Grand Junction Police Department has arrested 48-year-old Laura Lee Sanders and charged her with 4th degree arson and two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. The charges stem from the early morning fire at her home at 2576 Patterson Rd.
When officers arrived the house was engulfed in flames. Sanders was standing outside the house, but refused directions from officers to get away from the home. Instead she attempted to run back towards the burning structure. Fearing for her safety, officers pulled her away from the burning house and detained her.
Sanders later told officers she used a lighter to ignite the curtains inside the home, stating that the home was going to be torn down anyway. Officers booked her into the Mesa County Jail.
After putting out the fire, Grand Junction fire fighters found one dog and one cat deceased inside.
