The Grand Junction Police Department and the Grand Junction Fire Department were dispatched to the intersection of North Avenue and 29 Road after a report of a 3-year-old child hit by a Grand Valley Transit bus around 12:30 pm today. Mesa County Sheriff’s Deputies also responded to the scene.
Initial information indicates the 3-year-old child and an adult were crossing North Avenue when they were struck by the Grand Valley Transit bus, which was making a right turn onto North Avenue from 29 Road. The adult did not sustain any serious injuries, but the child sustained severe injuries and is currently at St. Mary’s Hospital.
At the time of this release, the status of the walk signals and traffic lights is still being investigated. Due to the serious nature of this incident, detectives and traffic Investigators from the Grand Junction Police Department have closed the intersection of 29 Road and North Avenue for at least the next two hours. This is to ensure a safe environment for a complete and detailed investigation. At this time, there is no indication of alcohol or drugs being involved in the crash, and Grand Valley Transit is cooperating with the investigation.

UPDATE: As of late last night, after being airlifted to Denver to go to Children’s Hospital, the 3-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries and did not survive. The investigation for this crash is still on-going and information will be updated as it becomes available.
