On July 25, the Grand Junction Police Department responded to East Grove Drive and D Road for a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a Dodge pickup truck and a motorcyclist. The driver of the motorcycle, Gary Willis, 60, of Grand Junction, was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital and was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The driver of the Dodge truck, identified as McElroy, stated he was driving eastbound on D Road, approaching East Grove Drive, when he made a last minute decision to make a left turn. He said he was looking in his rear view mirror when he began to make the turn, and turned in front of the motorcycle, which was traveling westbound on D Road, causing the motorcycle to collide with the side of his truck.
McElroy further admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day. McElroy agreed to perform roadside impairment exam maneuvers, which revealed several indicators of impairment. McElroy was arrested and transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for a blood draw. McElroy was released from custody after the blood draw and was informed that any charges would be pending the results. Forensic analysis of McElroy’s blood test by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation revealed marijuana in his system at the time of the crash.
McElroy was arrested and remanded to the Mesa County Jail at approximately 10:00pm on Tuesday, September 22, on charges of Vehicular Homicide Under the Influence of Drugs, Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, and Reckless Driving.
