Shortly before 6:00pm on Saturday, November 7, officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to Wal-Mart, on Rimrock Avenue, on a report of a shoplifter that had fled when contacted by loss prevention staff.

Upon arrival, officers contacted loss prevention employees inside the store.  Additional officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle in the parking lot, which was occupied by one male, identified as Joshua Arcello, age 33.  During this time, the shoplift suspect, identified as David Schwartzenburg, age 24, returned to the store and admitted to the theft of a cell phone.

Officers in contact with the vehicle outside the store located part of the cell phone packaging inside the vehicle in plain view.  A search of the vehicle was conducted for further evidence.  The search revealed a glass pipe with suspected methamphetamine residue.  Officers also located a black trash bag in the trunk of the vehicle, which contained approximately 14 ounces of methamphetamine.  Based on their training and experience, officers noted that this amount is not consistent with personal use, and would more likely be intended for distribution.  During interviews, both Schwartzenburg and Arcello confirmed that they had purchased the methamphetamine in California, and were en route to Iowa, where they planned to sell the drugs.  Further investigation revealed that Arcello was arrested in Arizona last month for the transport of dangerous drugs.

Schwartzenburg and Arcello were arrested and transported to the Mesa County Jail on charges of Possession of a Schedule I/II Controlled Substance, Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, and Importing a Controlled Substance.  Schwartzenburg was also charged with Shoplift.
