Over a Pound of Methamphetamine Seized Incident to Arrest #GVCopBeat

cuffsOn Sunday night, shortly after 11:00pm, an officer with the Grand Junction Police Department observed a white Chevy Cobalt traveling northbound on 28 1/4 Road from Orchard Avenue.  The vehicle appeared to have a flat rear passenger tire.  A records check of the license pate on the vehicle returned with an association to a subject with an outstanding warrant for his arrest.  The officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, and other units arrived to assist.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Thomas Laitinen, 47.  The passenger in the vehicle was identified as Samuel Frost, 41.  A check of Laitinten’s name confirmed that his license was suspended and he had three active warrants for his arrest.  Laitinen was placed into custody.

At this time, other officers on scene observed what appeared to be a pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine in the vehicle in plain sight.  When asked, Laitinen said that he was holding the pipe for a friend.  Laitinen stated that he didn’t have any other property in the car, but did advise that there was a rifle on the back floorboard of the vehicle.  By this time, Frost, the passenger of the vehicle, had been asked out of the car and had advised that he was a convicted felon, and that the gun was not his.  A backpack was located in the back seat, next to the gun.  Both Laitinen and Frost denied ownership of the backpack.

A search of the vehicle was conducted, to include the backpack.  Inside the backpack were two large bags, weighing over 1.5lbs, of a white crystalline substance, appearing to be methamphetamine.  There were also several items of drug paraphernalia in the bag, as well as a large amount of cash.  Also located in the bag were several documents with the name Samuel Frost on them, as well as a switchblade.

Both subjects were arrested and remanded to the Mesa County Jail.  Laitinen was charged with Possession of a Weapon while in Possession of Drugs (DF1), Possession of a Schedule I/II Controlled Substance (DF4), Possession with Intent to Distribute a Schedule I/II Controlled Substance (DF1), Driving with a Restrained License, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (DPO), and Driving without Insurance, as well as the warrants.

Frost was charged with Possession of a Weapon while in Possession of Drugs (DF1), Possession of a Schedule I/II Controlled Substance (DF4), Possession with Intent to Distribute a Schedule I/II Controlled Substance (DF1), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (DPO), Possession of an Illegal Weapon (M1), and Possession of Weapons by a Previous Offender (F6).
