Shortly after 2:00pm on Monday afternoon, officers with the Grand Junction Police Department were dispatched to a shopping center in the 2600 Block of Highway 50 on a report of a male with a knife trying to cut people. Officers located the man and ordered him to drop the knife. The male refused to do so initially, but eventually complied and was taken into custody. Dos Rios Elementary was briefly placed in shelter in place.
Follow up investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as Sammy Montoya, 37, swung a switchblade style knife at the victim several times, requiring him to duck out of the way and causing him to fear for his life. The victim stated the suspect was not known to him.
Montoya was remanded to the Mesa County Jail on charges of Criminal Attempt to Commit 2nd Degree Murder (F3), Felony Menacing (F5), and Reckless Endangerment (M3). No booking photo is available at this time.
