Update on Death Investigation at CMU #GVCopBeat

Posted on Updated on

Today at 7:43am, the Grand Junction Police Department was dispatched to a report of a deceased male in Confluence Hall on the Colorado Mesa University campus. The building was evacuated and locked down while officers and detectives investigated the scene. Classes in the building were cancelled. A deceased adult male, who is not a student at CMU, was found on the third floor of the building.

This investigation is obviously still very active and ongoing. However, initial stages of the investigation indicate that the victim was the only person involved in this incident, and we are not currently seeking any outstanding suspects. We have no reason to believe that there is any ongoing threat to students or faculty on campus. The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will be responsible for releasing cause and manner of death.

There was significant damage to the interior and exterior of the building, which we believe to be related to this incident. We have not discovered any damage to the Eureka Math and Science Center.

We understand the community interest in an event like this and are working closely with the staff at Colorado Mesa University to share timely, accurate information as soon as we are able to do so. As this incident is isolated to Confluence Hall, all operations throughout the rest of campus continue as usual. If anyone has information they feel could be helpful in this investigation, please contact Crime Stoppers via call, text, or online submission. Their website is www.241stop.com.

Regarding the man, Mike Dufresne, found dead at the campus; your police department, Garfield, Eagle, Pitkin and Mesa surely have access to his extensive record of domestic violence, criminal mischief, felony menacing, assault, burglary, 2nd degree assault with bodily injury, kidnapping, harassment, auto-theft, DUI, possession, assault on police and a repeat offender. Why not share this with the community and campus?? You know his history yet act like there’s a mystery? A mentally unstable male with history of IV meth & heroin drug abuse, assault, Domestic Violence, vandalism of property of significant other, bodily injury, and burglary (auto…) who most likely was delusional, found his way in the building with no concern or foresight (out of his mind) as he simply kicked the glass door in, found his way upstairs to a bathroom, probably left water running and did random destruction out of parAnoid delusions.
If there was alcohol in the tox screen, it’s known to make him completely unpredictable and possibly violent. There should have been an alarm, a camera ((aren’t they $29.99 on Amazon) or something at a door because his unpredictable behavior could have harmed someone but I don’t think it involved any premeditated factors as he was probably toooo high. He flushed needles or hid them if he had any and would leave things in total disarray (e.g.papers, cords). Totally pointless but in a delusional state he would take apart anything (e.g., a/c box, dvd, windows…).
